Hey guys/girls,

I suppose a quick background on me might help given that this is my first post; I work at an architectural practice doing 3D visualisation and it's quite a large office - so for the past 12 years we've occupied our lunchtimes playing Call Of Duty over the LAN - we've had most of the titles up until Black Ops.

Recently we switched back to Call Of Duty 2 with the mindset that I could model our building, car park, etc for some multiplayer maps. I am a very proficient 3D modeller though my background is in photorealistic - not low poly and texture baking, etc.

So onto the questions:

- What is the software used to build CoD2 maps?
- is it possible/difficult to import models I have created from 3DS max?
- If it is possible, do these models export with textures or texture coordinates/UV's?
- Given how good PC hardware is these days, does poly count matter much? I'm on a Quadro k4000/32GB Ram machine for example.

Many, many thanks in advance.

Welcome to Call of Duty mapping.

First of all to create a call of duty 2 mp map you need call of duty 2 and its Mod Tools. You can easily find cod2 mod tools by googling it. Or searching them in the site filefront.com . Its been a while since i downloaded them so i dont remember where i got them from the first place.

I would assume it is possible to add models from 3ds Max to cod2. But with some other steps taken in the meantime.
The only way (as far as i know) to port models in cod2 is through maya 8,5. there should be a plugin somewhere to export a 3d file from maya with the extension of file.xmodel_export These files are imported in cod2 with the program that comes with cod2 mod tools Assets manager a.k.a. AssMan. There you will first add the materials of the model which is more or less its textures, then add the model convert the assets and it should be in the map editor.

Now there are a lot more stuff you need to know to complete these steps. I am unfortunately not sure how to help in the Maya part cuz i use Maya12 that the cod model tools are for cod4 and cod5 i dont know if they work for cod2. And again im not very experienced with modelling itself. I just know how to add some models in mod tools :P

Anyway, that's all i can give please, forgive any spelling mistakes i may have done, and keep it up. Bye.

hi. import/export for cod2 can easy be done in Blender (i don`t use maya). Blender supports 3DS max also, then just export to xmodel_export. Easy. but i think there is a tut for maya also.

Yes, it supports UV's.
poly count does matter, but if you don`t have tons of models on your map, it should not make a big difference.
