I've modded COD4 maps for a few years now in my spare time. I've done 3 SP maps and 2 MP maps. I've been on hiatus for a while, but I want to get back in. However I want to move beyond COD4 tools and get into something else. I wasn't sure if this was the place to ask this question but I am looking into UDK or Unity 3D. My question is: what would be the toolset closer to the COD4 tools? I want to be able to curb the learning curve a bit and find something that I can slide into more comfortably since I am coming from a COD4 modding background.

The only thing I can tell you is the only toolset that would be somewhat close to COD4 mod tools would be probably ID TECH 4 SDK or the RAGE mod tools that have not been released yet.

Well Team Fortress 2 and Alien Swarm are two free to play games which work on Valve's Source engine. The map editor feels older than Radiant, but it's not too hard to learn. If you want to try something without having to buy a game.
