I was just trying to access the wiki and yet again, it was spammed. It's spammed today it seems because I checked the last update/modified time and it was today, the 7th.

I don't know what you guys are doing to the site, whether keeping it or disregarding it but the spam is annoying.

I am not sure if the admins know about it already. There should be some security on this wiki.

I did add more security, but they found another way around.

At this point, the only way to make it secure is to replace the entire wiki backend (it's old) and doing so will cause us to have to rebuild everything. I know this because last time I tried everything was screwed. It's because GoDaddy (the host) has too many limitations on us. We can't afford better hosting anymore.

I think we are going to discard the wiki at this point. It is too difficult to maintain.

I used the site a while back and it was fine. Oh well.

Ah ok. Is it possible to use the real wiki, wikipedia for this. lol

Anyways, if that's the case, to discard, then, I guess that's the way to go.

What about restricting who can edit the wiki? Surely that would work. Limit it to a select number of "trusted" editors. I know the idea of a wiki is to allow free access to add stuff at our own discretion, but if the alternative is to dump the wiki, I'm sure everyone will agree that trusted editors would be preferable.

I would hate to see the wiki go. As much or as small as it is, it contains a lot of historically valuable items. I always hate to see people's hard work from the past go to waste. We already lost a very useful resource when we lost IWNation.com, what with all the wealth of historical information it contained. I would hate to see the modsonWiki go the same way.

From what I have seen in the recent changes page, it showed some IP addresses. So those are the "untrusted" ones. These are the dirty IP addresses and should be blacklisted. Assuming all these spams come from these IPs, it may be possible to just block those IPs. If these people decide to use another computer to spam again, they really have a lot of time on their hands. Though I doubt not. This is another alternative suggestion supposedly the wiki allows blocking IP addresses.

Some people. [rolleyes]

Blocking IP addresses of zombie spam bots is futile. There are literally millions of PCs being used to run spam bots, and it is obviously untenable to block all those IP addresses.

Ah, didn't know about bots. Just realized now that they may be bots. Eh. Whatever it is, restrictions can be find but trusted users can be many. How about leaving it to admins only? That seems fine. Though then that'll defeat the purpose of wiki though. Anything helps.

Restricting editing will protect the current content but bots will likely start creating tons of user pages and others... On Modsrepository.com I finally got rid of spam using the captcha registration thing and limiting edits too.

Just noticed the registration has no protection at all, even a simple text captcha helps, but it's a right pain to maintain and in all honesty i don't think it's even worth it. Sure some people use it, but not enough to justify the amount of work it will take to repair.

Some ModsOnWiki articles are on Modsrepository.com .. I could certainly have a look and add the missing one.
