I took an image that had not been modified and still see lines when I tile it in photoshop. Can any image be made tileable?

using the method I described, I can make any image tileable. Just, some images don't look good when tiled this way... but still, no lines for me.

I wonder whats different about the way I do it and the way you do it.

You want a video of me doing it?

ok, I made a quick video of how I did the tiling as described here earlier. The video was compressed using DIVX 5.0.2 which, if you dont have, can be downloaded and installed for free from divx.com.

I hope this helps you out some.

The file is just over 3 Mb download (without divx it was 65Mb) and can be found here

For future readers of this post, the files may not be here. I have made these examples in a temporary location. They will be removed in a month or two.

Downloading the video now.
On another note I made two textures last night. These were very simple. I just took a new image, color filled, the applied and marble filter from eye candy. Made a few adjustments. Then I went through the feathering process. There were no lines in the tiling. Okay, then I made another one and didn't find any lines either.

After viewing the video a few times I saw where you did a Merge down once. The only other thing I saw was that you had 15 pixels in the feathering process. Would some images require more or less pixels in the feathing process?
When I Flip and move it looks like the grid lock is on and it snaps to the very edge.

I feathers 15 pixels because that was 50% of the selection I made... 30 pixels. So depending on the selection you made would define your feathering size.

Grid lock probably makes it easier in this case. I prefer to work with freedom and have good control since I am so familiar with the program. examples of what I use in place of the grid lock:
• after flipping, I can quickly move the layer strainght down by holding the shift key while dragging the selection.
• shift + arrow down (with arrow pointer selected as the tool) moves it 10 pixels at a time
• arrow down moves it 1 pixel at a time

During the video, there really was no advantage to using merge down over flatten layer. I just presented you with another option. Before saving the image, I did flatten the layer to make sure that everything I saw was all in one layer and there would be no misunderstanding when I "defined the pattern". If I was simply going to save the image for texturing, instead of flattening the layer, I would have first saved the image as a psd in case I ever wanted to edit it again in the future and then "saved as" in the format I was looking for.

just fyi: If I wanted to save the image for the web (online displaying or a webpage) I would have ctrl+shift+alt+s (save for web) in order to have compression options. but you know that's no good for texturing.

I can see that the edges are lining up... it's just that they are lighter in color than the rest of the image.

Looking closely... it looks like the source of your image is at fault.

Notice how you have a small line jetting in on all four corners. That shouldn't be happening on all four corners. You copied one and pasted on the other... this means you must have copied that weird line originally.

The same for the edges. I am thinking that the edges of your image were originally either light in color or not fully opaque.

I think the reason you can't get this image to work is because it is the source of your trouble.

Yup, I think you are right. I just went and got 50 new images. Dumped the ones I had been working with. Now all I got to do is resize them them I can start to work. Thanks for the tips and the tute. Hope someone else can get some benefit out of this thread also.
Later.

Some textures do not look good even if they are tiled correctly. You can see too many duplicate lines. So I have compromised and came up with this type of texture. Loaded in unrealed and it looks good. I can make any number of combos with granite and marble. Small, large etc. This might even get interesting. lol
