Scandisk the Drive fisrt to see if the drive has any errors. remove all temp files from IE, or whatever program you browse with. Next, remove all programs you will never use. Use computer manager and clear the Event viewer logs for Security, System, Applications. Then run Defrag again and if it errors out, follow the links to see waht possible soultions you might find.

I have seen a corrupt page file peg the processor. The fix for that is to set it to No Paging File. Reboot the system and then go back in and reset the paging file, and let windows build a new paging file.
