Yesterday, an announcement was made that Autodesk is to acquire Alias. Alias is the developer of 3D graphics technology including Maya. Autodesk is known for 3D Max. Together they make up probably the most used modeling and animation software for gaming. If this infrastructure merger results in a sofware merger, we are looking at a force that will take over the gaming industry in terms of 3D assets. Merger details can be found here.

I was surprised to learn that Alias was only worth $182 million in cash. Compare that to the $900 million plus for the purchase of EBGames.

Isn't there an authority which monitors if merging companies will gain a monopoly on a market? Because if this merger goes through I forsee something like that happening.
