Hi all, ever since cod/uo i've always wanted to have a go at single player mapping so i downloaded the mod tools and patch and followed the instructions. All was fine, i made a small 'test' map and it compiled ok, the problem came when i tried to use an xmodel and i couldn't navigate to the xmodel folder. When i copied the xmodel folder to the map_source folder, i could then access the xmodels. This has made me wonder if this is normal and should i have copied any other files or folders to a different location, or is the installation messed up.

Hmm...this is rather odd. Normally, you wouldn't need to copy the xmodels into your map_source folder. The xmodel folder should be inside the raw folder.

Maybe you have to reinstall the mod tool or check to make sure your folders are correct. xmodel folder should be in your raw folder.

And also I forgot how the loading the models in radiant works back in COD1 and UO but how are you selecting your model to load in radiant?

Misc > misc_model then click and select the model in the directory? Or are you doing it manually?

If not, you can try manually putting in the model to make sure you get the right folder.

Model/vehicle_car.

Other than that if it works with putting the xmodel in map_source, then stick with it for now.

Hope this helps.

You should get a prompt which you can browse through different folders to get to the xmodel folder when you create a misc_model in Radiant.

But if you want a model with clipping, you should create a misc_prefab, and go to the prefabs\misc_models folder. Most of the models which would need clipping are there so you won't have to clip everything yourself.

Hmm, I don't think the model clipping is his problem but now that you mentioned it...

If you try to load the misc_model in the prefab folder as a misc_model/xmodel, it won't work. Maybe this is what you are doing. You have to load misc_model/xmodel in xmodel folder.

It would be help if you can be clear on how you are selecting and loading the model in radiant.

To help simplify things, be sure to check that when loading a misc_model xmodel, navigate to raw/xmodel folder. If you want the misc_model in the prefab folder be sure to select misc > prefab.

Hi Guys, thanks for the replies. I am right clicking / misc / model, the map source folder opens and i can't navigate to the raw folder, in fact it doesn't even show. that is why i copied the xmodel folder into map source. If i choose misc / prefab, it takes me straight to the prefab folder which is in the map source folder. The thing is, are there any other folders in the raw folder that i may need to access directly because as i said, i cant navigate to it.

I don't understand how you can't navigate to it. Does your menu not look like this when you create a new misc_model? You have to navigate up a level until you hit the CoD4 game directory, then go to the raw\xmodel folder from there.

Yes, that does come up, but i cant navigate to the raw folder as it just doesn't show up in the list. I can navigate back to the game folder and open that again but no sign of the raw folder??

Did you try clicking on the drop down menu?

Maybe it's hidden, try enabling the viewing of hidden folders.

Try renaming the raw folder and see if it shows up and rename it back to see if something happens. If not, then there must be a bug.

This is rather odd.

Hope this helps.

Just tried that and radiant wouldn't even load. I guess you were right in your first post 'if it works, leave it'. My worry is, if through radiant, i need to access any other files that are in the raw file, i might not be able to. Also, although the map compiles and runs ok, when i compile the ff i get these errors

ERROR: Could not open 'rumble/heavygun_fire_h.rmb'
ERROR: failed loading 'rumble/heavygun_fire_h.rmb' of type 'rawfile'
ERROR: Could not open 'rumble/heavygun_fire_l.rmb'
ERROR: failed loading 'rumble/heavygun_fire_l.rmb' of type 'rawfile'
Localization ERROR: Unable to load "localizedstrings/mytest.str"!
ERROR: Couldn't find material 'mtl_weapon_m4_m16'

As a beginner at sp cod4 mapping i dont know if this is normal or if its related to the original problem

It's not normal.

Those errors are common. Meaning there are missing assets or raw files. The problem with the COD4 compile tool is that it came with missing files. I can give you the files but give me a day or so or you can ask other people for those files.

The localizedstring/mystring.str can be created. No need to dl this file. This is not a missing raw file. It's just the string file for your map.

I create a localizedstring folder in the main folder and mymapname.str goes in there. You can put in the raw folder, doesn't matter. It's a habit from COD2. I do the same thing for sounds, soundalias, etc. I hate the idea of converting to a ff file. It's tedious, map may not work, etc. I just like the old way where the game just read off of the files. Anyways. Just create it. You don't have to put anything in it. The file is just for your strings, like objective strings, introscreens, etc.

As for the m16 material error, I am guessing you ran the converter. You have to extract the same file from the COD4 compile tool archive into the same place. Another problem with the compiler. [rolleyes]

Other than that, the errors are harmless and you should be able to run your map without those.

I would suggest reinstalling to start fresh as it should work. If not, then just leave it as it is. Shouldn't matter. I don't have a clean install of the tool where everything is in place too, I got more than on the same files b/c I was restoring the backup and so I have duplicates. I left it. It's time consuming to go through them and delete them. So it doesn't matter.

What did you try and didn't work?

See if this helps.
