I have a friend who is trying to compile reflections using Windows 7. He says the BSP compiles fine. His Tools are Updated/Patched. When he tries to compile Reflections the screen just hangs and does nothing. He even left it overnight and the screen was exactly the same when he got back. He has a reflection probe on every floor. He gave me his .map file and I compiled the map just fine on Windows XP.

I tried searching the forums and I vaguely remember a post about getting the tools to run properly on Win7 but I couldn't find it, nor anything about it.

I'm not sure what is causing this but maybe someone else does. Any direction is appreciated.

I have windows 7 and have no issues compiling. If you want, I can try to compile the map to determine if it's truly a Windows 7 issue.

This is normally a memory problem, how much memory does the machine have? Also try the usual method of closing as many programs as possible and restart the PC before trying to compile to clear anything hogging the memory to start with.

Hmmmm, try putting the reflection probe in the air. I don't know if you mean this but it sounds to me it is on the floor. This can be a problem.

I know you said it compiles fine in Win XP but give it a try. There may be a glitch.

Did he install all the windows requirements like net framework, etc?

Reinstall tool or get another sp_tool.exe?

Run as admin?

Mystic is right, memory is important too.

I haven't had any problems either with Win 7.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll get with him later and see what info I can get from him.

UPDATED:

Here is the quote from him on his problems. He is running it as XP (Service Pack 2) compatibility mode.

Quote:
hey, I tried compiling reflections over night and when I got up this morning I could not get my desktop to show on my monitor, and I tried disconnecting the HDMI cable and plugging it back in. When that did not work I restarted my computer. Well, when I did that I was unsure how far along the compiling was. I tried to open up the CoD4 Compile Tools again and it automatically popped up a error message what is your advice?

The message read: "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

The process cannot access the file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare v1.7\bin\CoDCompileTools\CoDCompileTools.settings' because it is being used by another process."

There is also a "Details" button that drops down a message reading:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

I had him simply reboot, and I'm still waiting for the System Specs from him.

Doubt his specs are the culprit since mine are a lot lower than the ones posted and I haven't experienced any issues compiling reflections with Win7 32-bit. I would suggest he remove all reflection probes except for one then work forward from there. It might help that he close all unnecessary programs though.

Also even though I haven't had to use some programs, I thought it might be helpful to set run as admin and change compatibility for WinXP SP2. Good luck.

Changed programs:

[root/bin]
asset_manager.exe
CoD4EffectsEd.exe
cod4map.exe
cod4rad.exe
CoD4Radiant.exe
converter.exe
linker_pc.exe
MoDBuilder.exe

[root/bin/CoD4CompileTools]
CoD4CompileTools.exe

I'll let him know, thanks.

Also, I don't think it is the reflection probes either, because I have compiled the map just fine on my Win XP machine, with all his current map assets in place. Loaded the map and ran around in it. But I'll have him Change the priority of those Programs.

Hmm..

I remember having the "Unhandled Exception error". It was back when my machine didn't have the netframeworks installed properly or had the latest one or shader model 3. Shader model 3 would not apply in his case b/c he has GT 210. It has SM3. I would guess maybe the netframework was not installed properly or doesn't have the latest one.

He can always try to create new reflection probes. Remove the old probes and put new ones. Be sure to keep them above the ground.

Or copy everything in the map and put it in another one and compile that one.

Sometimes it may be just a map problem but compiles fine with other people. I remember when my map had some reflection probe or brush problems, my map doesn't compile properly.

You can always do a test map with reflection probe to test to determine whether it is the map problem or system problem. I don't mean his specs but his system may be missing something, like netframework, etc.

Leave the compatibility mode as default.

If nothing else work, my suggestion is to reinstall the tool and the game. Usually fixes the problems.

His specs is fine almost as similar to mine. 6 GB is sufficient and the video card is good enough to run.

Hope this help.
