CryENGINE Free Use

Anyone can now download a full version of the best All-In-One Game Development Engine, for free and use it without charge for non-commercial game development. You can try out the fastest toolset for creating game worlds and use the power of CryENGINE 3 in your own games

CryENGINE Free Use

You can use CryENGINE 3 for free in educational facilities, even if you are charging tuition. We have always offered our engine for free to educators, but now individual students can also freely download the engine and use it to learn about real-time 3D development.

CryENGINE 3 is also free for non-commercial use; if you are distributing your game or application for free (and not charging for your work in producing it, whether directly or indirectly), no additional license is required.

CryENGINE 3 Independent Developers Platform

We want you to make games with CryENGINE 3 that people will want to play. We hope that your work will lead to a product you can commercialise. If this is the case, before you can sell your work or your game, you must seek a development license for CryENGINE 3.

CryENGINE 3 for Independent Studios, Free To Play Games or Downloadable Games

Crytek has attractive options for smaller games built with CryENGINE 3, with shorter development timescales. If you want to move your game onto platforms other than PC, or you need access to CryENGINE 3 source code, please contact Crytek to find out more about our licensing for Independent Studios.

The 64 bit Launcher doesn't work for me.

I also couldn't compile the code until I turned off incremental linking (VS 2008) for some reason.

Cool stuff so far though, the editor seems like it has so many options. Surprised the package is under 1GB too.

I'm just going to dabble in the code for now and eventually the scripting, anyone planning on making anything?

/me thinks...

Hmm, maybe I should buy Crysis 2 to work on the SDK. Let me load up Steam.
Oh... they took that game off of Steam. :(
Oh, you don't need the game to play with the SDK :)

installation... "and execute the Sandbox Editor.exe". Uhm, you mean just Editor.exe. Putting "Sandbox" in that sentence just makes it confusing.

So yeah, you can download, install and play without the game. It's pretty nice.

Now I get to see the strange LOD system that Welshy had talked about on MODSonair when he saw this game last year at the Eurogamer Expo. It's not as drastic in the editor, but it's still obvious.

But is this engine equal to or better then UDK?

There's a caveat to the project encryption so only you can edit your maps -- having to have an internet connection and remaining signed in to you CryDev account to use the tools.
No way to work offline.

I wouldn't mind if the tools auto-logged you in. I dislike having to click the LogIn button every time I start up editor / launcher.

So how does a mod team or dev team work on a project if they can't open the same files??? [confused]

Share your login at the moment. Otherwise this is what one of the CryTek moderators posted:

Quote:
"In the near future CryDev's project system will allow a team of devs to access the same content, so authorisation is required for that."

Quote:
"Ah no, I wasn't clear enough there; it doesn't host your content for you (imagine the datacentres we'd need for that ) but rather allows other members of your team to access content that uses CryENGINE's encryption.

You'll still need your own VCS for versioning and sharing."

Quote:
"To clarify, currently any levels you create are restricted to your CryDev login. With the upcoming system, devs will be able to form projects and share the levels amongst their fellow members. We hope this'll be done fairly soon so you can start working on some excellent team projects."

Several great options to choose from for game programming these days. I remember long ago when the debate was pretty much only directx vs opengl. [biggrin]

Good Question there foyle. I managed to find this in the FAQ pdf that came with the tools.

Quote:
With this release, only you can open the levels you work on. With upcoming SDK releases the level management system will be extended to allow for the assignment of levels to projects, which multiple people can work on. At that point, only users who are part of a project will be able to edit levels of a project, while all users can open levels with the Launcher. Levels which are created now can be transferred to projects later on, so none of your work will be lost. The level management system will protect your creations against misuse by others and allow you to define who

The LOD is pretty bad in the SDK, I didn't have that issue with the PC version of Crysis 2 though. I'm guessing you can dial it up somehow?

So...MODSonline created game time?...I think so.

*Edit - ahhh damn sparky beat me to it.

I just found that if you go to "config spec" at the top menu and select "high" it completely dials it up to 11 and gets rid of the LOD problem.
