Im trying to make my first map and Im totally lost. I have a single apartment complex designed and before going any further I want to test it and I have some questions before proceeding.

1. What files do I need to create. (dont I need like csv's and gsc's?)
2. What do I put in them?
3. Where do they go.

I have a reflection probe, global intermission and a couple mp spawns for dm and tdm and also added worldspawn.

I also have a lot of custom textures I made so not sure if I need to put them anywhere to work properly to test.

Missing anything else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Ok so I was able to get into test the map but a few problems/questions....

1. Does every single room need a light source? Seemed rather dark and thought the outside light would filter in.

2. When I run Build Fast File I get this... though testing still works so Im scratching my head with no csv being found and a tut I watched even showed the same error but the guy never mentioned it or fixed it. lol

Yes I did watch that the other day, though he said he going to go into more detail after getting the same error and there was nothing more about it... so my questions still stand [ohwell]

That is just a warning. You'll need that CSV when you'll add a loading image for your map.

Ah ok... cool, so I will worry about that down the road then. What about needing a light source in every room? Is that just personal perference? And is there any limitation on placing a lot of lights or custom textures for that matter? Thanks for the response.

Very sound advice... thanks.

Question... how important is it to use the following and when is there a time that a skilled mapper wouldnt use either? Or do these really fall into "standard practice?:

Portals
Volume Light Grid

reply to HarryNuts:

Portalling is not required on small maps, but can help allot. Also though it can be over portalled and cause issues aswell.

Light grid volume is fairly important if you have an interior map, as it makes realistic shadows work. If you go into a pitch dark cave that does not have the grid file, you will glow like you are in direct sunlight, but everything else will be in shadow. This can also be overdone, as I have found out with my mp_school causing light compile to give the "Small hunk ran out of memory", error. Rule of thumb: steer clear from massive interiors.
