Sony is slowly letting slip some of the details of what's going on and what went on with their PSN service. It seems that they aren't just having technical difficulties. They have discovered that external intrusion has lead to access of most of your personal information stored with your Sony account. This means passwords, credit card data and whatever else associated with PSN accounts.

Sony is supposed to be issuing a formal statement later today. However unofficial statements are saying that your data because exposed on April 19th.

I'm wondering if this is Sony trying to build a case against Anonymous or if this was even Anonymous. Either way, there is a serious issue here for those involved either as the hacker or the victim.

Anonymous have already come forward and denied any involvements.

That's what I was thinking. A bit of fear mongering goes a long way.

I've purchased things from the PSN in the past, meaning I'm effectively one of those people that are at risk, as is anyone that has a PSN account.

If this is the case and what Sony is saying is true, then Sony f*cked up big time. Either way I think once they get their network back online, I will be closing my account on the PSN.

I'm not worried about passwords. Because if they have any logical sense. They'd use 1 way encryption methods. (Not the crappy MD5'ing)

As for credit card details. Luckily I never bought anything on the PSN. So I'm not worried about that either. But for those who have. Just keep an eye on your account. Alert your bank of the current state and just wait until Sony sort it out.

Instead of moaning. Do a little something to prepare JUST IN-CASE it's your details taken.

cant someone like foyleman sue Sony for something like this or? because they say your personal stuff is secure and everything but if those hackers wanted to they can go on the internet and auction off a bunch of credit card numbers or something... i had a playstation before but it kills me that i cant remember if i ever used a credit card on it or not... oh well im not to worried i guess.

This is a huge hit on sony and im sure PS number could be hit even harder because of it.

@liltc64
You could sue them but you would obviously have to prove it was your details someone had taken and how they used them unlawfully, you wouldnt have a case if you just showed up in front of a judge saying ' i read an article online saying sony lost some peoples info!!!1!!one''

To be honest, I don't think anyone's data has be compromised. It's just Sony's attempt to shift the focus from the original issue, the fact that they were taking steps to remove levels of control and choice from their users. It's why the group named anonymous targeted Sony in the first place.

I also don't believe there ever was a second intrusion. Sony maybe making some pretty idiotic moves lately but they're not stupid and leaving a network up and open after it has already been compromised once for it to be hacked again is suicidal.

Looking at press statements previously issued by Sony they stated that they have suspended and are rebuilding their network. I would hazard a guess that Sony is now using a "your important stuff got stolen" move to

1. Attempt to remove any support that anonymous had by claiming it's their fault that people's information has been stolen. Thus making the community hate them indefinitely.

2. Scare their users into accepting whatever security measures they will now be "forced" to impose. (e.g. Remove levels of control and choice from their users)

/ACTIVATE CONSPIRICY MODE

I wouldn't be that shocked if Sony had a hand in the original attack on their network...ok I would be but that's why I activated conspiracy mode.

/DEACTIVE CONSPIRICY MODE

This post is based on pure speculation and guesswork...just in case any lawyers are reading

i agree with welshy on this, anonymous may have attacked the psn network however if you actually look at any other things they have done its clear that they do not do anything to gain personally but more to spread the word. it does seem a bit odd that a huge company like sony would put up there network that is clearly flawed! atm tho its all just a load of hear say and rumours.
