Minecraft isn't shy with mods. Modder David Joslin created a modification for minecraft that drastically changes how the water behaves. Calling it FiniteLiquid, rather than managing blocks of water, you go to the lake and take buckets of water. As you take your water from the lake, the volume of the lake decreases thereby adding a finite supply to the gaming world.
He's included pipes and pumps if you plan on building a modern world or wish to apply any other interesting mechanics.

Am I the only one missing out on whats the big deal with this - sorry - horrible "game" that is minecraft? I did try it but found it absolutely pointless, dated and un-appealing. I must be really missing something as Minecraft has passed the 2 millions copy sold

I picked it up quite a while back to see what the big whoop was about it, and i can see the appeal, its very unique and despite the dated graphics etc it does have it fun moments, but then again i haven't really put much time into it so not sure what its re-playability is.
The numbers can't lie and most of it is word of mouth so notch does deserve a pat on the back.

It seems to be the exact opposite of everything the First Person gaming world has navigated towards and that may be a component of it's appeal. It doesn't follow the redundant formula in any way shape or form....
....or maybe it's just digital beanie babies.......

I must admit i play it, and So do allot of my friends.
In my opinion the reason it is so popular with kids my age is it is tapping into our fond memories of playing Nintendo 64, and building whatever your mind allows with Legos.
I must say it is a very fun game, albiet an acquired taste

I started playing with some friends for a bit but the novelty wore off pretty quickly. Wasn't interested in playing properly so we just all had admin rights and built our own stuff.
Killing your friend and burning down his giant cotton tower while he runs back towards it is fun, but only 5 or 6 times.
After that it's a bit tedious. Plus, why build it with cotton?
