http://modsonline.com/Tutorials-read-204.html Thats the basics, but for CoD4/WaW/BO you will need to get a iwi2dds to convert the images to a editable format. Once you have converted them to .dds edit the image in Photoshop, or a similar program, and then make them back into an .iwi using assman.
