Quake is making it's way to the cell phone market. Pulse Interactive and id software are working to bring Quake to the cell phone. I remember reading something in Carmacks blog about how much easier it was then he expected to program for a cell phone. To give you some insight as to what to expect, here are some quotes from Carmack that I found... Somewhat to my surprise, there is very little internal conflictswitching off from the high end work during the day with gigs of data andmulti-hundred instruction fragment shaders down to texture mapping in java atnight with one table lookup per pixel and 100k of graphics. It’s all just programming and design work. Network packet latency is bad, and not expected to beimproving in the foreseeable future, so multiplayer action games are prettymuch out. Even the 9.8Kbit speed would be great fornetworked games. A wide variety of twoplayer peer-to-peer games and multiplayer packet server based games could beimplemented over this with excellent performance.
.. and something to come? I have a small list of games that I think would work outwell, but what I decided to work on is DoomRPG – sort of Bard’s Tale meetsDoom.
Wouldn't it be awesome if we could port our old maps to the phones? |

We'll see if you are singing the same tune when cell phone technology turns out to be your best broadband alternative.
My cell phone is another tool to my arsenal. I don't make many personal calls, but it has given me an internet connection when nothing else was available.
STORY:
I once went on a trip to Virginia in the winter. There happened to be a pretty big snow and ice storm that day on our drive down so by the time we got there, driving was very difficult. We (me, my wife, 2 dogs) got to VA at about 11pm so no stores or service stations were open and we were lost. We were the only ones on the road except for an occassional snow plow. We were trying to find some cabin in the woods. I turned on my phone and my laptop, connected the two, and was online with yahoo maps in minutes. I was able to find our way to the road where teh cabin was located. However, the road was so icy, the car couldn't make it up the mountain (we kept getting stuch and there was so much ice on the road I could literally push the car back on the road across all the ice). From that point, I was able to find a hotel on the map where we could stay the night.
That's when I decided cell phones were great. |

this is all just part of the entertainment industry. Even television is making it's way to the cell phone just as the internet has.
To me, I see a bright future of being able to connect to anything whenever you need or want it... using a device that fits in your pocket. If I could by a phone that had the power of my laptop, then I would. That is however probably too far off.
But... by offering such capabilities inspires such invention tp progress.
OK OK... I am starting on a tangent here.
This thread isn't about cell phones and portable media... it's suppose to be about the idea of offering your maps and mods on a portable device. I don't know if it's possible, but I think it would be pretty cool to say, "Hey Joe. check out this new map or model I made for this game on my cell phone." |
