I didn't know that there was even an option to disconnect two individual vertices from a single patch.

If you just welded vertices from two patches in order for them to line up, you're still dealing with two separate patches. In that case, you just select either patch and move the vertices. But I'm guessing that you welded two patches into a single patch after lining up their vertices. I'm not aware of any option to disconnect individual vertices from a single patch.

If you welded two patches together, just split them with Shift+Ctrl+X. Or, maybe I'm not understanding exactly went wrong. Is it that you accidentally grabbed one too many vertices and had them pulled way out of position and welded to some other vertice?
