There has been a tremendous amount of confusion regarding the Combat Training feature introduced in Call of Duty: Black Ops. Essentially, this mode allows you face AI opponents and, theoretically, helps those who are not quite used to Call of Duty multiplayer, or just rusty, practice. It’s totally separate from online and your friends can join in, so, it’s multiplayer “offline”. Ugh, confusing! So, to clear up things a bit, and possibly enrage a few of you, is Treyarch’s Design Directory – David ‘Vahn’ Vonderhaar.
The following was said on the main Call of Duty website.
Combat Training is online. You need a profile on PSN/Xbox Live to use it. It is very similar, but not identical, to the normal rank progression.
It doesn’t support Contracts or Leaderboards but it does support (many) Challenges and most of the unlocks.
When in Combat Training, you start at level 1 and progress through the ranks. This rank progression is completely independent of the normal rank progression. You can be level 40 in Combat Training and level 10 in the regular game at the same time.
Combat Training is for someone who wants to get a taste of what it is like to play online without actually needing to play online against real opponents. To the extent possible and practical, we start you off at level 1 and you unlock features and earn cP (the currency) along the way.
It’s a simulation of playing online against real players. A big boss around here once called it “Single Player Online.” That doesn’t make sense and hurts the brains of MP people, but will make sense to SP people. It’s a way to play MP “by yourself” but you don’t have to. You can invite friends and they can play with or against you. In that regard, it’s similar to a Private Match.
Here is the total story on all of this:
ONLINE (requires Internet and the appropriate account depending on the game platform)
* Player Match = Rank progression. Get XP and cP.
* Wager Match = No rank progression. No XP awards. Just cP earn potential. No Create a Class. All load-outs are pre-determined.
* Combat Training = Rank progression (but separate from than Player Match version)
* Private Match = Allow Player Classes or make Custom Classes you want players to use. No XP or cP awarded.
Up to 2 player split-screen depending on playlist. Think of a Split Screen player like a player in your COD party. If the playlists allows COD parties, than it allows 2 players in splitscreen. Like a party, the two split-screen players will usually be on the same team.
LOCAL (does not require Internet)
* Split-Screen = 4 players together on a single machine. No rank progression. No XP or cP. Everything is unlocked.
* LAN Party/System Link = No rank progression. No XP or cP. Everything is unlocked.
David ‘Vahn’ Vonderhaar
What we get from this spiel is that Combat Training requires you to play online, the ranking system is different and that you can play split screen with your friends. So, what do you think of Combat Training? Is it something that will get you to purchase the game, a decent feature or purely a gimmick to you?

I've said my opinion, and not gonna do it again.
Just wanna add BO will be one great game but nothings gonna be better than vCoD, first game I ever played :D entire family enjoyed it (ofc with no blood xD)
Just imagine they release HD version of vanilla COD, I mean, CroTeam did with they're Serious Sam. New gen COD (BO) + COD1 gameplay (with no perks, custom classes, all the new COD trash) equals to Perfection.
My though is, that maybe they should stop making new COD'S, but instead improve the old ones.

LAN Party?
How can it be Lan when there's only 1 console? that's not Lan
And ivan and Mystic, have to wait until the tools are released, which I think they will be, then we can start modding etc: and see what people can make

Well they are not going to make anything new. Take a look at download section and don't ask yourself why almost every map's thumbnail looks pretty same. Some arabian ruined town with few prefab buildings and some destroyed tanks, mostly flat surfaces without any elevation change.
I think I'm gonna start creating my first map and try to make something unique, something new, something original.
Never actually found time, but on winter break I'm gonna get started. Only thing I actually need is time, skill's perfect, can do anything in Editor :D
ivan_cro
P.S. As for the maps in first sentence, mostly I mean on COD4. No offense COD4 mappers.

So does this mean the AI players are gonna run various hacks?...ya know, to give the player a REAL taste of online play.

Hopefully they did some voiceovers of 12 year olds screaming in mics, to REALLY give it that online feel.
