ok, what ive done (rather crude i know) is build a box around my level applied a skybox texture and set the same name in the map properties.

the problem

Some of my brushes apply the skybox texture?

Why is this?

Ive got to say its the first time ive tried to map since 1.5/6 so if there is a new method then i havent come across it yet.

Please can someone tell me how to creat a working skybox . .ive tried some of the existing posts but they dont work either. im mapping for source by the way.

Just want to clear 1 thing up 1st are you mapping for HL1 source or HL2 if it is HL1 sorry not got that.
The reason I ask is you said you have not made a map since 1.5/6
If it is HL2 did you use the tools/toolsskybox texture then add in map/map properties/sky box texture name the name of the sky you want to use.
If you have done all this please say and we will try to help you find the answer you need to solve your problem.

In hammer hit F1 to open the online help file lot of use full things in there

make the box for your sky using the nodraw texture.
from there use the skybox texture on the face you can see only.
now goto your map properties and choose your sky.
heres a webpage with skybox names and an image of them.

Dont forget that you need a light_environment to light up the map as the sun would.

Make a box over you whole map, texture it with tools skybox. Hollow it! Go to Map options and select a sky. easiest way there is..

yes sorry for the unclarity its Hl2 source.

ive done all of the above before posting as i said ive made entire hl1 mods before, ive just recently got back into doing more level design than audio, story and scripts. for some reason when i do the hollow box, apply the toolssky then set in the map properties the skybox name the area is black, if i try to set any other most of the map converts to the sky texture, Or, the sky seems to be the only thing you can see but you are actually running around. its very odd and very hard to explain. ill try and sort it out and post a full review of this just incase it happens to anyone else cos it is hella frustrating

i'm not realy sure, but pretty sure that the best way to make the box around your map for the sky is by making it manualy and not by hollowing it out. i believe Foyleman did say something about this, or was it you, J4FSwampyG? by hollowing the box out it could give some trouble. ok, it's a little bit more work to make it by hand, (there for it is always handy to keep sutch a box in a file so you always can start with this box ones you have made it manualy)

Sounds like you don't have any light in the map. Without light, you won't be able to see anything. If the sky has light in it, then that is the only thing you will see.

Though a couple lights near your spawn point as a test and recompile. You should see yourself when you spawn in and you will know the problem is lighting.
