there are a couple of ways to make trees.

There are tree models (models entities) in the columbia package.

You can get creative with brushes and custom textures. If you have any custom textures to work with and want to go this route, you should ask some more questions.

The trees you see in the MP maps are just models..

misc->misc_model

look for the columbia folder and pick one!

I use GtkRadiant too and had the same prob.
Go in the base-file and extract the models.pk3 with winzip. Now u make a rightclick in Radiant and choose misc/misc_model! I guess in RadiantSDK u have to create a model_static.
Then u change to the path (base/models/objects/colombia/jungle/tree).
Its normal that u can walk through it. You have to make a brush (or several for more realistic) with the clip-texture. Its more easy when u search after a model or texture with windows-search in the extracted file (models and textures).

I use sof2sdk and in here i right-click on the grid and choose model -> misc_model (like brutus said) now i get a windows screen where i can browse, search in colombia models for trees (i use the *.md3 models) to make them solid u should draw a brush called no_clip from the tool textures over the tree....

it may be possible to use a shader that places models automatically -- i know its possible to do it with sprites, can anyone confirm it works for models?

after adding your tree model to your map cover the trunk of the tree with the texture tools/clip_tree
