... well after i thought things where finally done, i was wrong.

Seems to be a new problem i havn't yet come across, ok the PC boot fine, play videos, music, surfs the web even runs programs such as photo editors etc. Problem is when i launch a game. The game launches but i just get sent to a black screen with a message from my screen reporting 'unsupported mode' (or something similar) Either way i cannot see anything on screen, but i can alt tab to get back to desktop and see everything like normal.

My desktop screen resolution 1920x1080 @60Hz it also changes to 4:3 (from 16:9) when launching a game. When i then shutdown or try to restart my PC i get post beeps which report the graphics card isn't correctly inserted, which completly confused me and to get past this problem and boot the PC i have to drain the power and leave it a while.

Dxdiag report no gfx problems, device manager and cpuid also report everything as ok. My system is very stable, nothing overclocked and all is cool as a cucumber. I tested this by opening every episode of supernatural season one at the same time which is 22 episodes and apart from a right noise no render problems or errors.

Too me it seems like a resolution problem so i edited the games .ini to manually change the res and refresh rate to match my monitor to no avail. I have also updated my driver twice now to make sure.

So once again, im all ears
Cheers.

edit - Forgot to say that it's the same screen i used before (36'' LCD tv) so it works fine. Also my gfx card is a HD5830.

Did you recently update your drivers; or have you not updated them yet?

Ok; good, we can rule out anything GPU related to direct X. Do you happen to have onboard audio, or do you have a sound card?

It means your GPU does not support that resolution.

Hmm try to launch game with with +set r_mode "1024x768" +set r_fullscreen 0, if it worked try to run CoD with r_fullscreen set to 1. If this don't work go to "#:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\miles" and remove file "mssmp3.asi".

@ Brax.
I have manually edited the settings files for games where i can find them, im currently trying to get bad company 2 and warcraft running.

@1337MattY
My screen should support these as it always has in the past. I can run my ps3 and xbox both through HDMI and its works on any supported res

I tried a game called Anno 1404, it worked fine, then i tried Modern Warfare 2 which loaded but was a green screen, slightly transparent so i could just about see through it. But battlefield bad company 2 and world of warcraft both wont display at all.

Did you look for dust in the seating of the graphics card?

Did you make sure you have all the power connectors properly plugged into not just the graphics card, but the motherboard too? The motherboard sometimes has an extra 4-pin power connection for the purpose of the graphics cards.
