Hello, I am trying to make a minimap, I followed two different tutorials on how to make a minimap for my Call Of Duty 4 map. On the first one, I got as far as playing my map with a minimap, but the minimap was the same checkerboard pattern. I could see my arrow moving around a big box on the map when I press esc, I wasn't just on the side of the map. But there was no image. So I figured there must be something wrong with my image. So I found out that CoD4 requires a TGA file and I had a JPEG. So I remade my minimap from the start. But now when I try to convert by asset, it says...
Quote:
************ ERROR ************ 'mp_test' in 'texture_assets/compass_map_mp_please_work.gdt' and 'source_data/le vels.gdt' is a duplicate Conversion failed with 1 errors. Hit key to continue.

I don't know what else might help so I will also post by BSP and Fast File logs...

Now I can still play my map, but there is still no image for the minimap. Just a checkerboard.

.GDT files go in the source_data folder - not the texture_assets folder.

Your .DDS or .TGA file to make the minimap goes in the images folder - not in the texture_assets folder as it isnt a texture.

------

A note on a couple of common mistakes when making and testing minimaps and loadscreens:

1. When you've successfully made your minimap, make sure the materials file is added to your zone CSV file

2. When your ready to test your minimap ingame, make sure the IWI file is added to your IWD file. A common mistake here is that people dont make the IWD file correctly. They rename the .ZIP file to .iwd without actually changing the .ZIP extension. Make sure you have "show extensions for common files" checked in your folder options, so that you are changing the file extension itself.

The easiest way to make an IWD file for your map is to get a custom map from another mapper and grab its IWD file. Empty it of all IWI files in the images folder, put your own in it, and then rename the IWD file to your own.

3. When everything is done DONT test you map with the map's fastfiles in the zone folder. Custom maps go in the usermaps folder - not the zone folder. If you try and use the zone folder, the game wont read your IWD file.

Sounds like you have some things jumbled up. I was there too, minimaps and loadscreens are real buggers til you get one to work.

I don't have a file in texture assets called mp_test. Is this possibly your compass image?

You will have to remove any duplicates that you have, I would use asset manager to delete any duplicate that is NOT a stock file. Then search your cod4 folder for the duplicates that are NOT stock files and delete them. This part is frustrating and a hassle. Be patient and don't do anything rash.

Do you have a file in your source_data called mp_please_work.gdt? If not create one, open asset manager, click file, click new, select level, click new entry, name it mp_please_work, don't worry about entering anything on the right side yet, click save, name it mp_mymap. Now you should have mp_please_work.gdt in your source_data folder.

In asset manager, open mp_mymap, select material, click new entry, you should be able to use the compass tut from this point. Of course you need the minimap corners and a screenshot yadda yadda yadda.

Your compass/minimap and loadscreen will both be materials inside your mp_please_work.gdt.

gl let's us know how you make out. You might also try naming your map to mp_work_now_or_else!

I have my image in texture_assets and in raw/images. I added it to the CSV already. Do I have to have an IWD or can I just use the IWI if I don't have a load screen and I'm not distributing it yet... I will make an IWD when I distribute it but I'm not there yet. BUTTTTTT.............. It was in my zone file... I will try that.

Yeah I don't know why at all why mp_test is in my error message... I have never used it in making my minimap.
I did remove it with Asset Manager (duplicates) but what are stock files?
The tutorials I read told me to put compass_map_mp_please_work.gdt in texture_assets. I didn't get that but I just did what they said.
I will try and I like the new name, will be sure to try it for my next map =)

Stock files are the ones that come with the tools.

You shot your compass screenshot with minimap corners and the way the tut said to?

If you put this:

+ set r_fullscreen 1 + set scr_game_playerwaittime 0 + set fs_game Mods/customMaps + set scr_game_spectatetype 2

in your text box on the bottom left side and select all of the checkboxes. Put your .iwd in COD4/mods/custommaps.

add material,compass_map_mp_mymap to your zone file

that should do the trick.

Ok, the zone file was already updated, I already did that. I got the screenshot to work and it is a 512x512TGA picture now. But the IWD is just a zip file that is named mp_please_work and has images\compass_map_mp_please_work.iwi in it, right? Because some tuts said use WINRAR and the others said don't use WINRAR... and OK, stock files are the ones like levels.gdt. Got it.

Essentially yes. I use WinRar and haven't had any problems. After you have highlighted your folder(s) for the .iwd, right clicked and selected 'add to archive', tick the ZIP dot. then replace .zip with .iwd. In front of .iwd goes your map name. Then click okay.

The simpilest way to make an IWD file for your map is to get one someone else has made for their map and rename it.

Ok, sorry I've been gone, but anyway... I don't get what I'm doing wrong... here is EVERYTHING I did... (and btw, I found out the error message that pops up while loading my map but I could never see because of full screen said "Could not load image 'compass_map_mp_square'")

1)Script Origins with targetname minimap_corner in top left and bottom right, just below the ground
2)Compile, Fast files...
3)Open CoD4 with Cheats, Developer, and Developer script enabled
4)Type in console /set scr_minimap_height 10000
5)Type in console /exec minimap
6)Make sure lines are straight
7)Press "Prnt Scrn" button to take screenshot
8)Open Microsoft Paint
9)Paste screenshot into Microsoft paint
10)Resize it to 512x512
11)Save as JPEG
12)Open Adobe Photoshop
13)Resave JPEG screenshot already cropped to 512x512 just inside the white lines to 24bit Targa (TGA) as compass_map_mp_square (I made a new map just for this compass to try it out but it isn't working still)
14)Put the TGA into raw\materials and texture_assets and raw\images, just to be safe... because the error message says "Can't load image 'compass_map_mp_square'"
15)Open asset manager
16)Save as mp_square.gdt
17)Go to the materials section of the big list
18)Click new entry
19)Change "materialtype" from "worldphong" to "2d"
20)Change surface type from Error To None
21)Point color map to CoD4\raw\materials\compass_map_mp_square.tga
22)Change tileboth to notile
23)Change mip standard 2x bilinear to Nomip Bilinear
24)Check nopicmic
25)Save
26)Go to level
27)New entry
28)name it mp_square
29)Leave It alone
30)Save
31)Convert Current asset only (I forgot some steps and I don't want to renumber all the ones after them so I'm making decimal steps)
31.1)Add mapsmp_compass::setupMiniMap("compass_map_mp_square") to raw\maps\mp\mp_square.gsc
31.2)Add material,compass_map_mp_square and rawfile, minimap.cfg to my CSV Zone file
32)Make a .rar file named mp_square.iwd with path mp_square.iwd\images\compass_map_mp_square.iwi
33)Put .IWD into Usermaps\mp_square along with mp_square.ff and mp_square_load.ff
34)Also copy it into custommaps mod without .ff files
35)Take .ff files out of zone\english onto desktop just in case the game uses them instead of files from usermaps for some reason
36)Open CoD4 normally, don't use "Run Selected Map"
37)Open Mod "custommaps"
38)Start New Server
39)It will freeze with error message 1/4 of the way through loading =(
