Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey expects Activision to “essentially” close developer Infinity Ward after the completion of the second Modern Warfare 2 map pack later this year.

Writing in an investor note focused on the publisher's upcoming first quarter financial report, he said that development of Modern Warfare 3 will likely be spread across a number of studios that are new to the record breaking franchise.

“We expect Infinity Ward studio will be essentially closed after their next map pack release, with development work on Modern Warfare 3 spread between two studios not historically tied to the franchise,” he said.

Hickey’s prediction follows an exodus of development talent from the studio which created the Call Of Duty franchise – around a quarter of its workforce is thought to have departed since the sacking of studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella in early March.

It was also revealed yesterday that 38 current and former Infinity Ward employees have sued Activision for breach of contract, including unpaid bonuses.

Also, reports today reveal that another 3 developers have departed Infinity Ward, bringing the total of developes to depart now to 30. With only 100 employed at its height, thats nearly half of the total developers that were there.

More are expected to depart once the details of their roylaties and bonuses are ironed out, which is considered to be done in the next week or so.

R.I.P. Infinity Ward.

It was great while it lasted.

Every good thing must come to an end...

But I don't think IW will cease to exist. The world is full of talented (and unemployed) people.

I dont see what that has got to do with anything. This isnt about pissed off modders and mappers in the least.

But while we are on the subject of modders and mappers, DICE are handling the new MOH multiplayer. As it will be using the Frostbite engine as well, there wont be any mod tools for that game either, just like there arent for Bad Campers 2. What do you think they are doing to modders and mappers? pee-peeing them off do you think?

Nothing personal in what Im about to say, it certainly isnt directed at you specifically, but Im getting a little tired of people talking about IW and Activision like they are the only games developers/publishers who are going down the wrong road and pee-peeing off the PC community. They are all at it.

^ I second what DemonSeed said.

Check out Unknown Worlds Entertainment though, they seem pretty supportive of the PC community releasing mod tools before the game is even in alpha to cater to PC gamer / modder needs while also picking up potential talent to include maps in their game.

That info is a little out of date. So far, 18 of the former developers at IW have been hired by Respawn, and 1 non-developer.
