Quote: Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella explain the decision as a conscious effort to improve their game for the vast majority of their players.
"We're just prioritizing the player experience above the modders and the tuners," says West. He points toward the mounting feedback IW has received from PC fans of Modern Warfare who couldn't find a decent server to play on between all of the cheaters, the insular communities, and huge skill level disparities that the original game's community fractured into. "We thought maybe it would be cool if the fans could play the game," he laughs.
IW says that gameplay concerns for the majority of MW2 players are the overriding reasons for the decision. Zampella downplays the obvious piracy prevention angle (IW has cited numbers of people online playing illegal copies of Modern Warfare up to 60 percent). "The Steam stuff helps with the piracy. I don't know that the matchmaking stuff does," he notes. West takes a shot at the motives behind some of the outrage, noting that there's money to made by selling dedicated servers and adspace on them: "It's a little dubious. Some of the people complaining are complaining with their pocketbook."
Again and again during our conversation, West and Zampella hammer the point that hardcore PC players lose very little to this change relative to the returns that casual to moderate fans will see. Clans can set up private matches to do their training or what have you; all they lose is the ability to customize the game on a deeper level with mods and such. Infinity Ward sees the addition of solid matchmaking and community support like IW-run tournaments to the PC as a huge win, and not something that could be done under the old system.
Not exactly warm and fuzzy about moding or customization.
You have to see beyond the PR spin to "sell" the idea of IWNet, and see where they really stand on modding and mod tools.
I know for a fact that it was Jason West who has consistently been behind issuing mod tools when Activision told IW they didnt have any budget to develop them. Jason was the one who more-or-less insisted that we got the COD2 mod tools, and personally asked IW developers to work on them in their own time. Himself included. If it hadnt been for him, we would never have got them for COD2.
As for that press statement, remember, even after that statement was made, Jason had planned to issue mod tools for MW2. Thats where he really stands.

so porting over iwnet and the whole console matchmaking shebang then testing it, was quicker than using what was already there, and jumping straight into testing?!
oh and chuckin in a big FU to mappers/modders in the statement posted above!
still not buying it.
I can grasp them being forced into it by activision! maybe they should just come out and say that...
I'd give them the benefit of the doubt then! |

All the locked down game had already been tested for the console side of things. They didnt have to test the matchmaking side of it to the same rigours that they would have had to had it been dedicated servers. It had already been done through 360 and PS3 Q&A.
You dont have to buy the theory, but its almost impossible to explain what was said to Rudedog any other way. |

don't think anything has been announced about payed DLC for the PC yet has it ? i know the date fo release was anounced , did i miss somthing ? anyway , i can assure you the DLC price for the console version was around $15 on the PS3 and 1200 ms points on Xbox live
getting back on topic , as far as i see it , this whole MW2 caper has really changed my point of view on many thing's , we have Treyarch starting to get the hype machine wheel's greased and ready for action , but my enjoyment and excitement at the prospect of a great new game for us to play and mod has been completely replaced with nothing but suspicion and dismisive attitude
why is this relevant to Zampella and West ? whoever , whatever , whenever , how , why and what they did for this situation , they , both of them are at the centre of it all !! they where in the driver seat , they knew what they where doing and further more they may have done it all to get to the stage they are now !
in my eye's , they made a power play to elevate themseleve's into a position where they could basically dictate the term's of any new agreement with another publisher !
synical ? yes , paranoid ? possibly , blind to their "genius ? hell no !
frankly , i dont care what happens to these guy's , they are not the "be all and end all" of developer's or creative genius , the community has more to offer !!!!!!
