First of all: SSDs need to come down in price!

Ok that;'s out of the way:

I have a huge list of different MS Visual Basic Programmes and MS .NET Framework in my Add or Remove Programs.

Can anyone that has the CODWAW tools installed tell me what they have in their list that works - Because surely I don't need all of this [sad]

I'm on XP.

And I have "MS COmpression Client Pack 1.0 for XP" Yet when I search it it's actually for Vista and doesn't seem to server a purpose on XP.

My Hard Drive is failing - sounding like a train in fact, that's not good right?

I'm uninstalling, backing up and crossing my fingers, I need HDD recommendations, recommendations based on reliability and long term constant use please. (nothing above £100)

Can I reccomend visiual file memorization. On a serouis note, hope you get this fixed soon. I freaked out when you logged off steam, all I could think about is your HD finally failing. I'll do some looking around tommrow and see if I can find a good SATA somewhere here.

.Net frameworks and Visual Basic/C++ runtimes are used by loads of things, and I think the compile tools will crash unless you have them (the former, specifically).

If you get your new HDD then the space they take up should become a non-issue - just be sure to back up important stuff before your current one fails.

Backing up lots now and that's what I was afraid of Dobby :|

Plus, yup Ownage, it crashed. Very very quickly getting my PC back into proper working order, I have backed up my map sources on all 3 HDDs and have now got my programmes list down to about 20.

Something is wrong somewhere though, it shows Allied Assault as being 74GB for instance!

eh... lol.... LITE-ON DVDRW LH-18A1P would be your DVD drive, the 500 gigs part would be your hard drive capacity, they're completely different [wink]

Anyway, 1.5TB Seagate drives are around £90, WD Green ~£80 and Samsung Eco Green ~£70, but any modern drive from Seagate, Western Digital or Samsung should last a while.

Don't use power saving (green versions) drives for your system drive, if they spin down you have to wait a few seconds for it to spin back up.

As Killer suggested......any of the top names as mentioned will do nicely. Dont look below 1TB since the prices are pretty good compared to the small amount of money to be saved going smaller.

SSD would be nice but I agree too damn much $$$$$$$.

I personally bought a 1.5 terr as soon as I had the money for $175 for my parents and myself. Basically left it for my dad to use when I stopped using it, now he thinks it's his (i.e. he thinks he bought it). So, about 6 or so months after purchasing it, my father tells me it crashed (i.e. HDD broke), and he's too lazy to let me call in the warranty or call it in himself, so guess what? I'm out $175 and he's out about 1.5 Gb of songs from Itunes (he has to re-download now). And to top it all off, it had only been used about 15 or 16 times: Turns out he DROPPED the f-er on the ground while drunk. Amazing what money my parents waste that belongs to me. Lol. [mad][evil]
