One is PCI-E, one is AGP.

What video card bus do you have on your motherboard? (Unless it's a very recent motherboard, it's likely AGP....but you need to know for sure).

That's the difference between the cards. One will NOT work in the wrong bus.

I found this little sketch on a forum at techburn.com:

here are the three most common:

AGP - which there will only be one. and it is more often then not a brown one at the top with a littl "lever" think that will clip onto the "L" shaped piece on the end of the card
see cheesy diagram below

|===============|======|------:.

PCI - most common of all usually white and usually between 2-6 on one MoBo
see diagram below

|===============|======|

PCI-e - PCI-express fastest and less common.... but is on the rise now
see diagram below

|=====|=====================|-----:.

hope tis helps

If you dont understand this, post the make and model of your PC so I can look up the specs online.

How old is your Vaio? PCI-E is pretty recent. (If YOU don't know which model on that link is yours, well, neither do I...[wink]

Most of the models on that page have integrated graphics with a video slot free, and most if not all are PCI-E. If your Vaio is older it won't be PCI-E. You don't want to guess wrong on a $400 item that you'll need to return.

or

use Start-Run-DXDIAG

Your current card is listed on the display tab. What is your current video card?

Follow this link to autodetect your model number:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=FAQ&PRODTYPE=1

You may have to install an Active X control (and allow the popup), but dont worry, it's safe. After you know what model you have, you can input the number and click on the 'Manuals/Specs/Warranty' button. That should tell you what kind of slots you have.

If you still cant figure it out, post the model number the autodetect gives you, and someone here can look it up for you.

BTW, a GeForce FX5200 can be either PCI or AGP.
