Hey guys,

This is a bit of a weird question. I am moving overseas and will also be "moving computers". Is there an easy way to backup COD4 with the Mod Tools and install again on a different PC, but keeping all my files and textures that I have created making my levels?
There are files all over the place within COD4 dir that I have created making my levels.

I know I can just copy the COD4 directory, but will the game run like that on another PC? Wont I have to re install COD4?, and when I do that will it erase all my level building files?

I would freak if I lost all my hard work.. Does anyone know of a good and safe way to be setup and back to working on my existing levels on a new PC?

Thanks in advance [thumbs_up]

Well, you could backup the entire CoD4 folder. Then install CoD4 on the new PC, from the CD or Steam (whatever you have), then install ModTools, then patch to v1.1, then simply copy the backup over but without replacing any existing files.

I can tell you that these folders are not part of the ModTools:

DirectX, Docs, main, miles, mods, PB, players, usermaps and zone.

The rest were installed with the ModTools.

You should have your map files backed up somewhere anyway, be it a different HDD, disk or memory stick.

Easiest way to copy everything would depend on what devices you have, if you have another HDD, just copy then entire call of duty folder to it, then reinstall the game and overwrite all the new files with your old files (reason to install it is to create registry entries)

The other way would be to download the tools and install the game on your new computer like normal but copy the 'map_source' folder from your old PC and then paste in your call of duty folder. This was if you don't have any other storage devices it should be easier because the filesize your copying will be smaller (depending on the amount of maps you have)

If you back up the entire folder, and then install on a new computer, simply copy your backup over your installed folder.

it will update (patch) itself with the updated ff's and iwd's, as well as put all of your structures back to what they are on your existing computer.

i have done this twice now so i know it works...

it also saves having to go through all the patching and extracting of resources again

That's probably the best way.

I'm working on an application to do just that. It backs up all map files through check boxes and up to 4 custom folders along with some other things. If I get the Beta done in a couple days, it will be out this week. I'll post it on the site.

You could also do it manually. There are really only a handful of folders that hold custom files. The Game, and the Mod tools can be reinstalled and then you can just add back in your backup files and folders.

How long do you have before you leave?

DeekCiti - that sounds great. My last day with access to my computer will be Monday the 8th Feb. (trying desperately to finish a map before then)

Id love to try out your app if its ready in time. Thanks for that [jumping]

Stryder - Thanks also, that sounds simple and I like that I wont have to re install the patches etc..

Thanks guys [thumbs_up]
