Maya will only work with plugins compiled against its own version number. The company did that intentionally. Sometimes it is possible to fool such programs by opening the plugin with a hex editor and manually changing the version number of the plugin. Other times it does not. In this case it does not since the change from 8.0/8.5 to 2008 has too many differences. Its similar to how graphics drivers written for XP do not work in Vista.
