I have many panes of glass in my map, large panels of glass in an office building. I'd like to make that glass tinted darker.

Is there a way to start with the texture I'm using, glass_clear, modify it and save it as a new texture or even change the stock so it still remains as "stock?"

I've seen many tuts and posts about importing pixel-based textures, but nothing about creating the equivalent of a "procedural material" as it is called in the non-game 3D world. In others words a custom texture that doesn't use a .TGA file.

Where do I begin? Does the asset manager serve as a starting point or just to convert pixels?

Thanks.

Since you're talking about modifying textures, then it must mean you know how to work with Photoshop (or another image editing program).
If so, why don't you make your texture from scratch ?
I'm asking this because modifying someone's work is generally a frowned upon method.

To do what you asked, you would have to find the glass texture IWI file, then use a program such as IWI2DDS for conversion. Then make your changes and reconvert using AssMan.

Photoshop? Oh yeah. I've been using it since V1.0. Couldn't even do color back then.

Why would it be frowned upon to adjust an existing texture? We all use Infinity Ward's textures for our own creations, right?

In this case, to make clear glass but darker color with slightly less transparency, I wouldn't need any artwork per-se, just not sure how to make a clear texture with some adjustments. I would imagine it's either a color and transparency setting, or at worst the transparency would be handled by a grayscale map.

Reverse engineering of their software is against the EULA, for personal use it's probably ok but not for releasing your map.

I suggest you grab some textures from www.cgtextures.com and modify them / tile them where needed.

edit:

You need to register an account, 15mb per day download limit (which is more than enough)

Let me rephrase the question:

How do I create a unique texture to simulate clear, tinted glass, WITHOUT using an image to fake it?

I hesitate using the word texture since to me, that always means a texture map, i.e. an image that someone else created. In my 3D software, I can make a material that doesn't use an image at all, but will look like glass. Thus making it my own unique creation.

cgtextures.com is good for using pixels to simulate a surface.

Either I don't understand what you're trying to say or you're talking of some advanced stuff.

You said something about procedural textures. The programs that make those (like Genetica) can be quite expensive, so why go through all that trouble ?
Those 'pixel textures' are free and easy to use, so I don't see where the problem is.
True, there are some free programs (like MapZone), but who knows what kind of problems might appear with those textures and this game. So, it's probably safer to go the old fashioned way.

COD4/Asset manager doesn't do pro textures - I use 3ds max so I know what you're talking about. Asset manager only converts pixel images to a different format, with options for blending and extra maps (specular etc).

To get your effect, you've no option but to use an image with an alpha channel: in asset manager you can set the blend mode to 'blend' or one of the other settings to get it working.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the confusion.

I just want to make non-dirty, tinted glass. Darker, but you can still see through. What's my approach?

You can just make an image of any size and fill it with a solid colour, then fade it out so it's semitransparent.

The best approach for making a glass-like effect, at least in Photoshop, is to create your image to any size, create an alpha channel, fill the RGB channel with a grey color, and set the blend option to "overlay".

Save as a DXT5 DDS with generate mipmaps.

In Asset Manager, create your material as a world phong, surfaceType as "glass", set the following frame buffer options:

BlendFunc = blend
alphaTest = GE128

and finally set the following colorMap settings:

no tile
no mipbilinear

Unless you also want to create a normal and sepcular map to give the glass texture a sheen, thats it.
