Awesome tutorials, I would like to see one on making a winding road alpha blended into the grass verges, the last one I saw was great, I think it was by mapicted, but there was no naration or bubble boxes to tell you what keys he was using.

Keep up the good work m8! Your a valuable asset to the mapping community.

Ian.

P.s. What program did you use to record the videos?

I think hes using Camtasia, it's one of the most popular screen recording software.

I have used Camtasia for some of my previous vid tuts as well. The problem that I always had with Camtasia is figuring out what are the best settings and such.

If BlackJack would be so kind as to share what settings exactly that he used would be beneficial to all who are interested in sharing info in a video style.

Thanks

Great tutorials, thanks a bunch. You're a pretty good narrator :)

One question:should I turn all terrain patches that are used for decals into Non-colliding ?
Also, I've read somewhere that a terrain patch with a blend texture is already non-colliding.

PS: It seems that W@W has a lot more textures than MW.

I use camtasia for all my screen recordings. However, after recording, I extract the AVI and use another program for video production. I found Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum to be affordable and pleasant enough to work with.

Yes, I realize this isn't the exact question that was asked, but fyi...

In my older tutorials, I used to compress is down to Quicktime format because I could get the best looking video at the smallest size. IT was very important to use Quicktime itself to perform the compression as all the other video editors I have used did a less efficient job.

Now I am compressing down to WMV. With sites like Vimeo, video size isn't as important. My compressions have been:
Windows Media 9
1024x768
1.0 square aspect ratio
25.0 PAL fps
5 seconds per keyframe
90% smoothing
5Mbps
audio: 48kbps, 44khz mono CBR

This is typically high quality for local playback. But again... uploading to vimeo or the like means a quality video that you don't have to download.

Hi Ian , and thanks for your kind words [thumbs_up] i am working on a tut for making a detailed bendy road , just need to test and tweak the technique for ease of use , i also saw the tut that mapicted did and although impressive , didnt offer much in the way of info , so ill do my best to show a way to create somthing similar

i do indeed use Camtasia for both screen capture and video rendering

i capture the video at 1280x720 at a capture rate of 30fps

edit the video using Camtasia studio

for naration , ive found it easier to record the video first without it and then use the naration tool in the studio . I find it easier to comment on the action after the fact because i find it much like rubbing your belly and patting your head lol

your trying to do the actual work , comment on doing it and trying to remember all the info and sometimes your mind goes blank for a second and you blow the take lol

heres the codec info for the final rendered video

Stream 0
Type: Video
Codec: avc1
Language: English
Resolution: 1280x720
Display resolution: 1280x720
Frame rate: 30

Stream 1
Type: Audio
Codec: mp4a
Language: English
Channels: Stereo
Sample rate: 44100 Hz
AAC extension: SBR

camtasia project settings :

MPEG-4 video (MP4) movie file:

Frame Rate: Automatic
Playback controls: None
Pause at start: Disabled
Video Bitrate: 3000 kbps
Audio Bitrate: 96 kbps
Audio Format: AAC
Watermark: Disabled
HTML: Disabled
Table of Contents: Disabled
SCORM: Disabled

*Stretch To Fit

hope this helps and thanks for the feedback [thumbs_up]

i would also like to mention at this point that if it wasnt for the hard work and effort put in by people from all across the community it woudnt be possible for me to create these tutorials

without the hardwork from people such as WYATT EARP and Foyleman for bringing us their video tutorials , there was no way i would have carried on learning when i started back in the early UO day's

there are so many people that have helped me out over the years it would be un-fair to single out a few so instead i would like credit the community as a whole [thumbs_up]

Good work on the tutorials. You are including all that is require to cmplete the same task.

Many of the earlier tutorials made years ago are excellent but I always found some would neglect one minor aspect that when learning, would be critical to mapping success and cause frustration when attempting to copy what was being shown.

At the end of the day, any tutorial that helps the community is worth it.

Again good work. Keep it up. [thumbs_up]

Many others including myself spent many hours writting tutorials and helping people on X-fire daily so don't just give credit to the people making video tutorials.

Come on Jean, relax.

The way that I read it is he "credits the community as a whole" for helping out so dont get your knickers in a knot. I have spent lots of time writing out tuts and recording video and working with and on other peoples maps as well. I have never felt slighted when my name or my contributions were overlooked at a personal level.

settle down tiger !!

as LPRay so eloquently put it , it was meant to be a credit to the whole community [thumbs_up] if i listed all the people who i found to be helpfull over the years it would be a very long list ! and i would still miss people out

sorry that offended you jeannotvb , ironically , my intention with my statement was that i was deflecting credit for myself and directing it to the community and everyone in it ! and then you got upset for not getting personal credit ! funny

sorry for causing a scene , peace
