I spoke to him an hour ago on xfire. He told me that he would try to port Modern Warfare 2 to cod4, as far as the engine would allow him

About directx ripping...if you could manage to use it in MW2 and get a model out of it, I'm not sure about the legality but I doubt Activision would go after you for porting content from one of their games to another.

If that doesn't work then I don't know, you could look for alternative models from other sources that are just as good.

Anything is possible; one just has to make an extractor for the new file format; and simply get the xmodel, xanim, xmodelparts files etc.

nothing simple about it mate, trust me. The MP fastfiles are somehow protected or use at least 2 levels of compression. Only one is known (zlib for plaintext files), the other one - no clue. SP/SO fastfiles are way easier to extract, the structure is pretty much the same as in cod4. But: there wasn't ever a real fastfile extractor for the binary data, only a zlib decompressor which afterwards scanned for ASCII strings. It did not even use the ff index to find plaintext files (it's still a great tool aintnomeinteam!)
It emerged that it's a hard job to read the data blocks contained in a fastfile 'cause you need to figure out the datatype structures first to determine the block sizes. And the next problem is to interpret the data, it can be very different from the original input data.

Although the files themsevles might be a tad bit different like CoD2's .map to CoD4's .map.

CoD2 .map to CoD4 .map is easy compared to fastfile model data to xmodel, xmodelsurf etc.
.map is plaintext, but working with binary data is difficult if you aren't the one who invented the format & compiler [ohwell]

Lets hope so. Haven't seen an official confirmation yet - only 402 mentioning possible modtools news.
