e stands for exponent, the base is 10 and after the + or - is the actual exponent 1e+004 = 1 * 10^4 = 1 * 10,000 = 10,000 1.2e+004 = 1.2 * 10^4 = 1.2 * 10,000 = 12,000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_notation
