If anyone wants to read how Valve runs dedicated servers on XBL for the 360 version of Left for Dead, check out this article:
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3169669
It gives a good insight into how IW.net might work. Remember - 402 was asked by iBleedv20 on BASH if the MW2 match making system was like the Left for Dead match making system, and 402 replied "yeah, its very similar". Was he intimating more than just the similarity to the LFD match making system, and hinting how IW.net itself is structured?
I found this on Wikipedia about the LFD match making system:
Quote: When first releaed, both console and PC versions of LFD have a new matchmaking system to simplify the process of finding other players. This new server management system was met with a negative reaction from PC server operators, who, with this system, had very little control over their servers. This led to Valve releasing a series of patches that allowed server operators to remove their server from the matchmaking "pool" of servers or make private servers. Valve runs dedicated servers for both versions of the game.
Given what 402 said about MW2's match making system being "very similar" to LFD's one, have IW come up with a "similar" system of dedicated servers running on IW.net, where a player can either use the matchmaking "pool" of servers or make private servers?
Whereas it seems unlikely that this will happen on launch, but is it possible that IW will follow Valve again and model IW.net on the LFD setup, and allow people to rent dedicated servers from IW and allow "server operators to remove their server from the matchmaking "pool" of servers or make private servers"?
Also consider this - Could it be that IW.net will run on Live for the 360 as well, in the same way that Valve runs dedicated servers on Live for LFD?
Perhaps this thread should have been entitled:

regardless of the small print...
a perfectly working system is to be butchered.
no more maps/mods?
charged for "dlc"
they deserve the aggro for this alone, we all know this can only lead to a wow type scenario..
£10 a month..plus £10 per mappack....rinse and recycle every year.

they already have a system which disallows us from adding "ranked" maps, if that can be locked down...then i'm sure mappack maps could be disallowed if not purchased! makes all this unnecessary!
if they tried to sell us "ranked" maps tho, we wouldn't buy them, they know this...so must kill all mapping/modding.

I personally have always said I'd be prepared to pay for DLC if it meant getting it as soon as everyone else. It would save all this faffing around trying to find sponsors and crap. |

I wonder if they'll explore this topic in their magazine too.
I think Mr Edwards has, like most of us, jumped to the conclusion that its peer-to-peer. Is it though? LFD isnt a P2P network, and 402 said IW.net is "very similar" to that.
I dont think, at this stage, that comparisons should be drawn with XBL, as I dont think its been established that IW.net is a, to quote what many are saying, "a PC version of XBL". |
