Hello,
I have a question on how to change the sky texture in a .pk3. I dl a really good map but it is too dark and I want to change the sky to something during the day. What is the best way to go about doing this? Would I need to compile it all over again or can I just change the sky in the bsp and save it to the pk3? Any help is appreciated.

Im sure you could just change it in the pk3, if you gave it the same file name. Although without looking i dont really have any idea.
Also, get permission to edit the file of whoever made it.

If the texture is an original game sky (such as brecourt, chateau or something similar) you can't change the sky texture, because it's embedded inside the .bsp.

If the map contains a custom sky it MIGHT be possible by altering the custom sky texures inside the .pk3 file. However. if it's not your map (which probably is the case) I'd ask permission from the maker first. I'm not sure how the altering of the sky texture would affect connecting to a server which runs the original map though. You might get kicked...

In addition to the above,

changing the sky will NOT brighten up the map, in fact it makes it worse b/c now you have low sunlight settings and ambient (which are controlled by the worldspawn) creating an environment w/ dark surfaces but a bright sky! The contrast makes it really hard on your eyes.

Also.. if the map is too dark for you, adjust your brightness setting in the "options" menu ingame.

Skybox textures are just the same as anyother texture in the game. So you would make one the same way as making say a texture for a wall etc.

As for the map being too dark, maybe whoever designed it meant for it to be like that, having made a few maps myself I know that having a low light effect in them makes for a more realistic scene. Its about getting the lighting balance right, too much light and it looks too bright, too less and its very dark, if u get the balance right you get a perfect shadow effect

nope. Sky textures are made differently. I saw a post about it somewhere recently but I cant remember where. Use the search function and search for 'Custom Sky' or something like that.

I've always used the same method for skies as any other texture. Just remember to include it in your pk3.

={W}=DEVIL{LtCol},
if you run across it could you post a link? I'm always willing to learn something new.

Thx,
