Technically yes, however in theory, you can work around that by simply changing your email address to a 'valid' address and then uploading the avatar. When going to your user preferences to select your custom avatar, change your email address back to the 'invalid' one. I recieved no error message on doing this, but the truth is in the proof.

Moment of truth: If my avatar is listed next to my name, then my theory will prove to be true.

The point of posting this was not only to test my avatar, but to point out a problem that may be preventing actual email addresses from being used. I can't stand the 'invalid' email errors...when accidentally subscribing to something one time, I got 50 emails a day and was not able to unsubscribe because I had an 'invalid' email. How gay~!

Well, as you can see I have the avatar up there, however, it wasn't there at first.

The avatar had been uploaded and my theory correct, but there was one more problem. Alt+0230. The ASCII in my name (æ) was causing a problem within the code; therefore, after removing the character the avatar, as you can see, shows up fine and dandy.

Props to foyleman for assistance in solving this problen. In the mean time, if your name has a special character in it, then your avatar will not work unless it is changed. Your avatar, by default, must be the same as your name so if you are in this position, you might want to just either change your name so you can change avatars as much as you like.

Yeah, I uploaded mine with FTP. I just gave up for a while with that invalid email thing....
