I would say it is a very good idea to join the verts of terrain or patch meshes. If you were thinking of just moving the verts to the same grid snap then be prepared to do way move work than you need to esp. when you start doing more detailed terrain. The weld function saves you alot of time and is more accurate!

Also, try to only use terrain mesh w/ terrain mesh and patch w/ patch.

Is there a way to join these quickly and without losing the shape, ie teh weld function, I tried joining the one by one using the ctrl+k until I got to one that didn't match up right and thought screw that ...

I'm not totally clear on what your asking but...
If you meshes are flat and on the same level then there isn't any need to weld them just make sure you use the biggest grid size that allows them to match up on the exact same line. Once you start manipulating the verts you'll find out what a life saver the weld function is.

Also when you add a link just put:
yourlinkhere
this will allow people to just click on the link
