Hi, i know everyone has said it is impossible to read.d3dbsp but i have found away to actual load up .d3dbsps, but i dont know how to "decompile. But if you can read it, thats the first step to creating a .d3dbsp to .map, right?

I know a way to read .d3dbsp files as well, its called Call of Duty 2. Every single stock map, or custom map, is a .d3dbsp file and is read by COD2 as the map loads.

As for the first step in compiling a .d3dbsp file, no, you have it the wrong way round - the first step is creating a .MAP file in Radiant, and then compiling it with the COD2 tools, till it becomes a .d3dbsp file. So, the order is: .MAP first, then .d3dbsp.

You can decode parameters of every entity on the map ( including its origin, angles, classname etc. ). However, it's impossible to decode geometry ( the form, which Radiant could understand of course ).

Apparently not:

Check out Sevenz second post, where he shows screenshots of a decompiled .d3dbsp file back into .MAP format.

it is possible of course, if it would be impossible, then the game couldn't use BSPs lol

btw. you can't just rip off the misc_models etc. in cod4/5, the entity lump contains scripted objects only (spawns, destructibles etc.) :(

Because this site is all about users learning and creating their own maps it would not be right for modsonline to advertise ways for people to 'cheat' by decompiling each others work.

People do give out .maps and prefabs to help others so use those instead.

Also COD games always come with stock .map files to look at and learn from. If you want to change a map then ask the author to make such changes.

Until I'm told otherwise any advertising of decompilers that can be used on bsps without the original authors permission will not be allowed.

I dont think the issue is contested m8. I think every self respecting modder/mapper agrees that it is wrong. Its just that when a theoretical question such as "can it be done?" pops up, you cant just say "no, its impossible" as that is just going to invite proof that it can be done.

Personally, I always answer such questions this way: "it can be done, but its not right".

I agree Demon and such answers are fine as long as there is no hint on how it can be done.

The trouble is the self respecting modders might keep to themselves and then have there levels decompiled and re-released by anyone without any care.

Exactly.

Although I respect everyone here, new and vet, the biggest problem is, people love to show off. They want you to know they have all the answers. Saying, "oh, I know how to do that".

When in fact, the best solution sometimes, is to pretend to be uneducated when something like this comes up. Sometimes it is better to be thought dumb.

In this case, we are not trying to solve an existing problem but trying to prevent a slip and fall, and "ouch I broke my arm".

Just walk around the puddle, don't worry, the sun will dry it up.
