Is there a trick to aligning Patches of different densities?

I have used higher density terrain patches next to low density patches for relatively flat areas. Try as hard as I may, I still get sparklies and even gaping gaps. I have tried hiding the seams whenever I can but that seems like a lame way to do this. I cannot snap vertices when one patch is 3x3 and the other is 8x8.

So how do you experienced guys do this? What about patch meshes for roads that curve and twist next to terrain patches that make a ditch or embankment?

Just make sure you leave the terrain level at those area's where those patches meet. No need to connect them that way.

My patch work is still pretty bad but what I've done is usually, the two patches aren't the same length on the side that is joining. I split the one that is smaller and add connecting points to try to get them to match up. Why? Because I ran into the same thing you did even though the join point was flat. I could not seem to get rid of the gap.

It may be due to the compiler too as I've had brushes (I know you are talking about patches) that I had mitred the edges and ingame they were invisible - like they were caulked. By simply changing the angle of the mitre, they showed up with the correct texture. Geometry, go figure :)
