a .dds file is more than just an extension

it is a converted file that is saved in at least 3 channels
plus has a mipmap

you cannot create a dds file by simply changing the file extension [angryalien]

And you CANNOT open it in ms paint because it is NOT supported. MS Paint is very crude. It looks at the extension, not the file. Most prgrams look at the extension then try to open he file according to that extension. If there is a missmatch, it will not open.

Well this is the complete log for those who want to see it.

I made the jpeg and then converted it with that program from the downloads section of modsonline.

I thought I had the wrong setup for the program so that's why I want the right ones if anyone knows them

Would use paintshop pro 9 to make the .dds, but the photoshop plug-in doesn't seem to work

Did you write your own .bat for the compile? If so and this is for CoD (not UO which I think is correct), double check it or use CoDBuilder or CoDPiler. It looks like everything is okay except I don't see any line that says it actually created the .bsp. There is an error in your vis portion and the flare can't find the .bsp - note because it didn't create it. Since I really can't see any other errors, it may just be a patch mismatch somewhere. Maybe try running with -verbose for your bsp stage just to be sure (probably won't help but can't hurt for now).

Here's the problem:

shader type 'world/cookie' not found

hence no BSP, compile stops.

Cause? Bad texture.

I know it's bad, that's not the point, I think I used the wrong conversion settings, THAT'S why I want to know if anyone knows the right ones [ohwell]

It seems that no-one knows

On the other hand what can you do wrong on a 512 x 512 JPEG?

FYI:

I use CoDpiler and it always skips the -vis part.
I also compiled the map without the custom texture for testing earlier and it compiled fine. after that I only added the custom.

If you are convinced that winrar will change your texture to a dds then you are on your own. The reason that noone is helping is because you are not listening. Many of these people have been around for a long time and know what they are talking about.

You know the texture is bad, then do it the correct way. WinRAR does not convert textures.

The correct settings is to use paint shop pro or photoshop with the nvidia plugin. Then load the jpg and save as DDS. It must be in a power of 2 for the sizes.

0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024...etc...

Rats. I was hoping it may have been something simple.

Question though, why do you want to make the texture a .dds? Do you have to for some reason? I have put lots of custom textures in my maps and left them all as .jpg files with no problems.
