I suspected someone of cheating on a WaW server - I had the drop on him (he wasn't even looking my way) and suddenly he killed me with a single shot. I was recording it at the time so I revieved the kill and he didn't even appear to turn my way (the 30fps video didn't capture it) - very frustrating!

Anyway, I thought I'd spectate him on the next map. When I rejoined he had already accumilated 47 kills in a matter of minutes, but suddenly (after a few minutes of viewing) he disconnected. Now, I've noticed this a few times when spectating people I suspect that they either leave the server or suddenly become less than extraodinary, i.e. no killing spree and killed as many times as anyone else etc...

So I'm wondering, can they tell when they're being watched?

No, he can't tell he's being watched (unless you tell him). Was that a serious question, because it sounds like you play the game too so you should technically know that unless you're positive not a single person has ever speced you. [duh]

Just sounds like a case of "someone is better than me so they're cheating" conclusion. People have a good game every now and then, just because he left or turned less than extraordinary doesn't equate to cheater feeling guilty, even if you told him you were going to spec you probably pushed the wrong button on the guy by slightly harassng the guy and stressed him out so he said f--k it and left to one of the thousands of other servers like you could do if you're paranoid about a possible cheater. I usually go like 45-5 on HQ but not continuously map after map, sometimes I do as bad as 15-30 depending on how into it I feel when playing CoD on Xbox or PC -- and I don't cheat.

Also sounds like you got a crappy machine or connection since it took you forever to join the next map, which is probably why you didn't see him turn around in the first map -- network or graphic lag.

Stryder would have something else to say about all this. He's found a number of people cheating in the past.

Usually we'll ask the player about it and they will either leave or have to be kicked. It helps we have our own server and can do that.

They should have no way of knowing they are being spectated.

I have seen a cheat where if you come within a certain distance of a player, he automatically knifes you. He could be afk, and still knife you. Based on that experience I would say something similar is possible just as you described. Since I have never sought after nor used such cheats myself, I cannot state for a fact that they exist. But it certainly seems obvious and I have others to back me up on this.

If they are cheating and see players idling in Spectate mode sure there is a good chance they will leave to avoid a ban on that server.

But no they cannot tell that someone is specing them directly.

SparkyMcSparks,

Firstly, my machine spec is more than adequate to run WaW on full whack and record it at the same time, and the ping was good also.. It didn't take me forever to join, I was reviewing the recording... didn't I mention that?

Of course it was a serious question. I play the game, but I have no knowledge of aimbots, wallhacks, mombots or whatever - so I quite reasonably wouldn't know what can and can't be seen or done with them, no?

I explained why it was odd and how my recording didn't allay my suspicions...so why draw that particular conclusion?

Forgive me for saying so, but you seem to have gotten out of the wrong side of the bed this morning. It may well be a silly question to someone with a greater knowledge than I, but none the less, it was a genuine question that didn't deserve your response.

Lastly, thanks for answering the question; and I'll make a concerted effort to keep my paranoia in check in future.

Good day to you!

Booting based on someones score is not a good way of going about catching cheaters hans. . . i recently just reinstalled united offensive, jumped on a fav base assault server of mine and ended the round with 76-3 score. Even got called a hack by someone within 20 mins of play.

Best thing to do is get a demo as anything did and review it and have a peer or two review it.

Ive been an admin for a UO server and we had a guy 2 of us suspected of cheating, so we got 2 more admins on there to watch 4 of us surround him and see what happens. We came in from 4 directions at once and he took all of us down in less than a second with headshots all around. Guy was banned for his hacks.

Never publicly accuse someone of hacking either cuz an admin may already be watching them and you could have just scared off the person they were watching. Admins want to catch and ban people like this. Get to know the admins of your fav servers and add them to a friends list on xfire so if you need to talk to them w/o the person u suspect of hacking of being scared off too quickly for an admin to do something about it.
