I have it working now :D. It writes to the log file. I will write a tutorial once I modify a few more things.

Turns out the that good old NON dev executable worked fine!

I have begun to write some more code, so it can write to a .txt file (as a test).

I don't think you understood whole thing. The file functions do not work. You don't have access to the file system. None of them work.

Nobody said it's impossible to write files tho. Simply set a few dvars and print whatever you want to a logfile. There might be other game engine entries in it you don't want, but it should happen very rarely in the console_mp.log, more often in the games_mp.log (or the name you set).

The point is: you can't delete or overwrite the same logfile. You can append plaintext, but that's it. The engine may overwrite the logfile per game session. But the biggest issue is, that it's one-directional. You can't read it again.

Well, if you use a temporary dvar to import strings, that could work (set DVARNAME "string", read/write config). Honestly, i don't believe you get it synched. So you'd have to use one dvar per entry / line. But it's rather ugly and error-prone. Especially because of the quotes. Might work without, but you'd have to write a parser to interpret the data anyway. Sounds like a lot work to me. More work than it's worth. Or how many modders will use it, what do you think?

some relevant Dvars:
g_log "games_mp.log" - logfile name

g_logSync "0" - asynchron or synchron writing

logfile "2" - console_mp.log, name seems to be hardcoded or i'm already too tired to find it again (0 off, 1 async, 2 sync)

log_append "0" - append or overwrite (per session?)

I gave the tutorial by Sgt. Rampage a test and it does indeed work, it's now live:

CreateFX generator Tutorial

You will need to setup your fx first in your zone_source and in the required yourmapname_fx.gsc and yourmapname_fx.csc.

The console liked to spit out some duplicate entries for me which made it a bit annoying, but it is nice to see instant results in the game world.
